Our Story

We built the tool we wished existed

American Dream Index started with a simple frustration: every financial tool either told you what you already spent, or modeled a retirement 40 years away. Nothing answered the question that actually keeps people up at night — can I afford the life I want, where I live, doing what I do?

Our Mission

Make the American Dream legible again

For most of the 20th century, the American Dream had a clear definition: a home, a family, a secure retirement. The path was hard but visible. Today, the path is obscured by complexity, geographic variation, and a financial services industry that profits from confusion.

ADI cuts through that complexity with a single number — your American Dream Index score — and a clear set of actions to improve it. We combine the Bureau of Labor Statistics' occupational income data with FHFA and HUD housing data to give you a ground-truth picture of what your financial life actually looks like, not what a generic calculator assumes it should look like.

We believe that if people could see clearly — if they could see that the problem is often their zip code, not their discipline — they would make different choices. Better choices. And that the aggregate effect of millions of better-informed decisions would be genuinely good for the country.

74
The average ADI score for a Registered Nurse in Chicago
That number tells a story: on track, but not thriving. One move — to Des Moines or Indianapolis — would push that score to 91. Same career. Same person. Different zip code.
This is what ADI does
Shows you where you actually stand
Shows you where you could stand
Tells you exactly what to change
Our Values

What we believe

Data Integrity First
Every number on ADI traces back to a primary source — BLS, FHFA, HUD, Census Bureau. We never manufacture data to tell a better story.
Geography Is Destiny
Where you live determines more about your financial future than almost any personal choice. We built ADI to make that visible and actionable.
Peer Transparency
Financial isolation is a feature of the current system, not a bug. ADI breaks it down by showing people how others in their exact situation are navigating the same challenges.
Actionable Over Accurate
A perfect model that produces no action is worthless. Every ADI insight comes with a specific, achievable next step.
